IOANNINA

Islet of Ioannina

There are many reasons why someone who comes to Ioannina must visit the islet of Pamvotis Lake. It’s a different island not only because it’s the only inhabited lake island in Europe, but also the only island in the world without a name!

It is a miracle of incredible natural beauty and historical significance. It is located in the northwest part of Pamvotis Lake in a small distance from Amfithea village. The island extends just about 200 acres and has almost 100 families as residents.

If you want to make the island tour, you will see traditional houses with beautiful gardens, you will walk along cobbled streets and you will admire the exhibits of Ioannina’s tranditional folk art.

In the island you will discover seven monasteries ‘Byzantium’ and ‘post-Byzantium’ built the one next to the other, forming the third largest monastic state after Mount Athos and Meteora.

There is also located the museum of Ali Pasa where he died. The holes on the floor of the bullets that killed him still exist. You will have also the opportunity to see local costumes and documents of this era and many specific personal belongings of Ali Pasa and Kyra Frosyni.

Finally you must not miss to taste local traditional dishes as frog legs and eels.
